About Earthboy

Earthboy is the moniker of contemporary artist Matthew Kavan. His work is a celebration of the natural world, an explosion of colour, pattern, and shape. Using hand-cut scraps of paper he creates works of art that capture the beauty of nature with pure simplicity and joy.

Often his style is visually inspired by post-war mid-century graphic design. Putting a new spin on contemporary craft illustration, you’ll notice visual cues inspired by the mid-century works of Paul Rand, Miroslav Sasek, and Hanna Barbera cartoons. With work that is full of colour, Earthboy is making prints that are playful and awash with charming imperfections. Using a pair of old scissors, cutting paper to create an art practice focused on the simple pleasures of the natural world.

About the Project

Taken from the Earthboy portfolio, a self-initiated series of Halloween stop-frame animations inspired by the original TV series “Tales From The Crypt”. Made from hand-cut paper shapes and animated frame by frame to build a clunky, naive, and charming spooky aesthetic. Each animation frame is individually cut out of paper, with the shapes assembled piece by piece and then scanned in to form the stop-frame timeline. The misalignment of objects between frames, the changing textures and non-uniform cut edges all improve the artwork giving the viewer an insight into the production of the work.
